Marc de Klijn

Marc de Klijn (b. 1939) was separated from his Jewish parents and hidden with a Christian family as a child of four during WW II. De Klijn studied at the art academy in Basel and became a graphic artist. In 1971 he met the father of Anne Frank and was commissioned to provide the graphic design for a publication of various reactions to Anne's diary. During his research he was confronted with photos of the horrors of the concentration camps. Later he visited Auschwitz. These experiences have greatly affected his themes and their expression. In his paintings we find abstract landscapes and biblical and visionary themes portrayed with bright colours, emphatic forms and strong rhythms. In 2004 he published the autobiographical art book De doden zullen herrijzen (The Dead will Rise Again). In 2007-2011 a second book evolved, called Schouder aan Schouder – Vindplaatsen in het beloofde land (Shoulder to Shoulder – Sites in the Promised Land) with watercolours of his own, photographs and poetry by his wife Henny van Hartingsveldt, and meditations from the Bible. Since 2013 Marc and his wife live in Israel. www.artmahe.com
